And so ends a year marked by my little weekly mixtapes. A year marked by the death of the “King of Pop” and hopefully the death of Oasis; the return of Blur to the stage and the return of the Manics to North America; the rise of Susan Boyle and the eventual incarceration of Phil Spector. The last weekly mix for this year will be for New Year’s Eve – last year’s mix can be found here. We’ll also see if I can manage a best of the decade post before the new year.

Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday, and…Well, Friday I’m in Love: Year-End Round-Up Part 1

It’s a little difficult to believe another whole year has passed since I started this blog – in January, CTRR will hit its second birthday. Once again, I didn’t make a weekly mix for every week this year, though I tried to make up for as many as I could. In this part of the series, there are mixes with themes of: lullaby/sleep, Scotland, colours, John Peel, work/unemployment, Valentine’s Day, underdogs, cover versions, synthpop, Wales, Ireland, dance, spring, paranoia, and science fiction.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my friend, Roland, who has kindly allowed me to use his ftp for these mixes (you might have noticed that since Halloween, I’ve been posting zip files of full mixes – thanks to this ftp).

Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday, Ruby Tuesday and…Well, Friday I’m in Love: Weekly Mix #91

I explained my loathing of Christmas last year, and all I can say is how happy I am not to be working retail (it was getting pretty close as the resumés kept going out to no avail last year). I’m already feeling the funk creep in (not the Parliament kind) as I avoid the shopping centres and try my hardest to block out my mother’s moaning about not having enough extended family for holiday occasions (the dig at my singleness is duly noted – if only she could understand what pure joy I have in my own company…she’d likely have me sectioned).

Apparently, Christmas sales are down this year, not because of the credit crunch or the recession or whatever else you want to call the routine economic trough, but because we don’t have any snow yet. I find that peculiar. Are we, as humans, that affected by climate conditions when engaging in capitalism? So, not only can we blame obesity on our snow and extreme cold, but we can also accuse frozen precipitation for our economic woes and proclivities. Just think – if global warming really takes off, Manitoba just might end up a communist province. Hmmm…has anyone checked into how much snow Russia got at the beginning of glasnost?

I did solve one problem for this year: I went ahead and downloaded that pesky Christmas with the California Raisins claymation special that we hunt for in our basement every year. Although, now that’s one less tradition and I feel a little emptier inside.

As I did with my Halloween mix this year, I will merely add on some tracks to last year’s compilation. There are considerably less palatable Christmas tunes than there are Halloween ones, so I’ve tried my best to ferret out some other good ones, or at least ones that won’t make you want to cut yourself on ornament shards or climb into the chimney, curl up and die. New tracks include offerings from: yet another Eddie Argos project, Glam Chops; the witty Eugene McGuinness, who came in as a runner-up in my top albums last year; darkwavers I Love Poland, who cover The Waitresses’ Christmas classic; a bouncy bit of holiday house from Saint Etienne; Hyperbubble and their double-speed synthpoppy carolling; the best track from the How the Grinch Stole Christmas; some acoustic anti-capitalist balladry from Rufus Wainwright; Yeah Yeah Yeahs and an unconventional bit of festive pop; IAMX’s ethereal French version of Silent Night, which I put up under a different post last winter; Jane Siberry and a characteristically gently sweet holiday song; a Ryuichi Sakamoto piano instrumental from the film of the same name that also starred Sakamoto; a 1972 classic from Harry Nilsson; and the rather hilarious duet between Stephen Colbert and Elvis Costello, which first appeared in Stephen Colbert’s Christmas special last year. Following the tradition of Better Than Fruitcake, this mix is called Better Than Mincemeat. Why call bits of fruit drowned in alcohol “meat”? Truly disappointing for those of us who enjoy meat.

Next weekend…Year-End Round-Up.

Penguins

Time’s whipping by so fast that I have to start planning out these last weeks of 2009 on CTRR. Last year, there were several festive year-end features on the old yuletide blog (groan if you must), including my Year-End Round-Up weekly mixes, the countdown of my Top 40 albums of the year, the Christmas weekly mix, and the New Year’s Eve party mix. And I still have to work in my Day of 200 songs before all of this kicks off.

This week’s mix will be a winter one despite the fact that it actually hasn’t felt terribly wintery here. We’ve been uncharacteristically warm and have not had any snow yet (of course I’ll write this and then a blizzard will fall on my head whilst waiting for the bus). At any rate, here it is for your listening pleasure. I’ve been told that it provides a welcome alternative to Christmas tunes. This mix is called Blow Thou Winter Wind.

Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday, and…Well, Friday I’m in Love: Weekly Mixes #88 and #89

berlin-wall

To play catch up from last week’s missed mix, I’m giving you two once again. They’re timely with their themes, the first being all German artists and the second being songs about war. In fact, in many ways these two themes are inextricably linked. As everyone celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down, it inevitably brings Berlin’s extraordinary history, along with Germany’s more generally, back into the spotlight. And Cold War is war after all.

I’ve written about how much I love Berlin here before, and it still remains one of my top cities in the world. It was the hub around which so many ideologies and political agendas marched in the twentieth century. And that surreal wall and its solid representation of clashing ideologies will continue to inspire art. That sense of artistic freedom amidst continual opposition is also something so characteristic of Berlin. Additionally, I’m just generally interested in German history as a whole, having taken courses in university and having read several books on the subject. For a country that was historically impossible to unify, the “reunification” in 1989 was made all the more poignant. It’s definitely more complex than that and far more fraught than the fireworks and celebratory dominoes would have you believe, but I think it’s far preferable to that absurd division.

Germany will always be significant to me because that’s where my dad is from, and thus, where half of my family background lies. I’ve visited Germany twice in my life, and fully intend to do so again in the near future. And as a music fan, I can’t ignore Germany’s contribution to the electronic/experimental scene. It’s also rather fortuitous that I just viewed a BBC documentary on Krautrock a couple of weeks ago; it was actually pretty informative since I only had vague ideas of that particular music scene. I knew about Can, Neu!, Faust, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, but never really stopped to think about the motivation behind that kind of experimentalism. In post-war Germany, young people were trying to make sense of the past while distancing themselves from both it and an increasingly Anglo-American present. The result was a truly revolutionary vision of music that continues to influence electronic music today; of course it also influenced musicians contemporary with them – through that documentary, I discovered that Brian Eno had gone to visit Harmonia (which included members of Neu! and Cluster), taping them before working with Bowie on those Berlin albums.

So, this mix includes several of those early bands, but also some much more current ones, and a few unique ones in between, like Nina Hagen and Klaus Nomi. This one’s called Die Mauer Wird Fallen.

War

I don’t think my views have changed much since last year’s Remembrance Day post. I find all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the day to be a bit hollow. Yes, my grandfather died in World War II, but to wear a poppy and have a moment of silence once a year doesn’t mean much when armed conflict just goes on and on around the world. Remembrance Day becomes a superficial day of reassurance – the reality of war can be painted away with the ennobling brush. Soldiers aren’t victims of the decisions of those in power, whose deaths were in vain, they’re sacrifices for a noble cause. Noble causes that continue on in places we have no business being in anyway. War is a commerical enterprise with expendable losses. We valorize to cope. This one’s called War Inc.

It’s time for another covers mix. I’d like to highlight a couple of the tracks here. Firstly, I want to give some context for The Rest’s cover version of Robyn’s With Every Heartbeat. This cover is the first song off their new EP, which will be accompanied by an illustrated novel, The Cried Wolf Book. This book, along with the accompanying four songs, will “chronicle the life of the boy who cried wolf as an adult.” I’m definitely excited – just as enjoyable as the surreal story that complemented Allegories’ debut record, this one, which starts here, turns fairy tale telling on its head. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t be intrigued by the sentence, “Hans was tossed into a deep, claustrophobic well riddled with scantily clad mermaids, making it a damp, sexually suggestive prison.” Read more about The Rest in my previous review, and you’ll have to wait until November 1 for the next chapter in the book.

Secondly, I want to say how absolutely fantastic vitaminsforyou’s cover of No Cars Go is – just when you think the song couldn’t get any more anthemic, this re-working does it with synthy aplomb.

Next week is time for my Halloween Mega Mix (I might just build on last year’s mix). But this week’s mix is called Take Cover.

Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday, and…Well, Friday I’m in Love: Weekly Mixes #84 and #85

Manic Street Preachers (Horse And Groom - Front)

As promised in my last post about the Manics show in Toronto, one of this week’s mixes will be Manics-themed. It couldn’t just be a bunch of Manics album tracks, nor even a bunch of b-sides (frankly, I do enough of those in other mixes and posts, and that would all be too easy). Since they are one of the most dynamic live bands in the world, this mix is comprised of tracks from various bootlegs of Manics gigs. I have nowhere near the amount of bootlegs other Manics fans have, but I delved into what I did have and came out with a decent assortment. The majority of the bootlegs I have are pre-Richey-disappearance (for obvious reasons I suppose), but there’s also a few tracks at the end from later shows, including the 2006 XFM Winter Wonderland show in Manchester where the first couple of tracks from Send Away the Tigers were revealed. Note the songs Generations Terrorists (which I included in this mix) and Faceless Sense of Void are actually early versions of Stay Beautiful and Love’s Sweet Exile, respectively. I think this mix shows a beautiful evolution and captures different facets of songs I’ve listened to so many times; the nuances and the crowd’s live energy make these bootlegs something to treasure and remind me of the Manics’ dynamic presence.

I want to dedicate this mix to all of those fans I newly met two Sundays back (Dan, Connor and his two brothers, Maria, the couple from Buffalo, the father who attended the Vancouver gig and then brought his son to the Toronto one, the girl who attended one of the JFPL shows at The Roundhouse), to the old friends who were there (Evo), and to all of the ones I didn’t get a chance to meet properly – I saw you and your dedication, and I just may have been the one taking your photo with James (I seemed to become cameragirl for a moment for several people). I regret not getting more contact information from all of you. I came to the show hoping I would meet at least one new friend, and I more than accomplished that. This one’s called This One’s For the Freaks.

New Hampshire Autumn

I’ve got a slightly different excuse for why these mixes are late this time: I was in New Hampshire over the weekend being the maid of honour for my oldest friend’s wedding. They picked the most beautiful season to get married in (or out, I should say, considering the wedding took place on the beach next to a lake), especially since I think New England probably has the most attractive, quintessential display of autumn leaf colours in the world. In fact, you expect to see the Headless Horseman chasing Ichabod Crane at any time. I had a great time, even more so because it’s been five years since I last saw this friend. She picked a fantastic guy, and together, they’re some of the most entertaining people to be around (one day we will dominate the charts as The Leaf Peepers, a band that uses only steam-powered instruments, wears David Bowie Labyrinth-era wigs and two eyepatches per person, and sings about iPods sprouting consciousnesses and legs, and style will finally triumph over substance). In addition to all of the social aspects of the wedding trip, I also had a fun time taking a walk by myself through the trees in upstate New Hampshire, snapping photos (one of which is above this paragraph). It was a perfectly crisp morning spiced with the scent of pine and fresh wind coming off the lake.

Finally, it’s starting to get autumnal here in Winnipeg (the freak Indian summer is definitely over, so much so, we may just leapfrog directly into winter), and I can look forward to smoky air, vibrant leaves, cool days, warm food, and the best holiday ever – Halloween. So, here’s a little autumn music. This one’s called For C + M.

The Samurai in Autumn – Pet Shop Boys

We’re in a Thunderstorm – Gentleman Reg

Gone Like Summer – Strawberry Story

Theme to the Autumn Leaves – Autumn Leaves

Waiting For a Chance – Northern Portrait

Further to Fall – Trembling Blue Stars

Forests and Sands – Camera Obscura

No Excuses (The Autumn Cantata) – Air France

Road to Somewhere – Goldfrapp

Under the Folding Branches – The Veils

September – David Sylvian

Autumnal – Arab Strap

Everyday is Like Sunday, Except for Blue Monday and Ruby Tuesday, and…Well, Friday I’m in Love: Weekly Mix #83

post punk mix

This post is a couple of weeks late, but considering I was very ill last week, I think you’ll forgive me. Whatever coldette I had a few weeks ago was nothing compared to this all-out attack on my immune system. It just stopped short of the lung searing bronchitis of a couple years ago. Nonetheless, I only allowed myself to miss roughly one day of work (the illness guilt my mother instilled in me as a child is still there). I’m really starting to believe I have an immunodeficiency disorder what with my chronic allergies and seemingly high risk of infection. If I had been around even a hundred years ago, I probably would’ve been either dead by now or in a sanitorium. Anyhow, I’m on antibiotics, which make me quite horribly nauseous, and I can only hope my body doesn’t turn against me again for a few more months.

It’s been a really long time since I posted a post-punk mix – in fact, the first and last one was way back at Weekly Mix #2. Of course there’s been tons of post-punk featured here since, but just not all in an explicit compilation.

Also, I’ll try to get a couple of posts out this week (as you can tell, I still haven’t worked out how to keep both the blog and my regular work going at the same time). Once again, I’ve been intending to do reviews of about four or five albums, but the time or the brain just never seems to be there.

This one’s called A New Messthetic.

The only certain thing that is left about me

There is no part of my body that has not been used

Pity or pain, to show displeasure's shame

Everyone I've loved or hated always seems to leave

Photobucket

So I turned myself to face me

But I've never caught a glimpse

Of how the others must see the faker

I'm much too fast to take that test

The Smiths Queen is Dead

A dreaded sunny day

So let's go where we're happy

And I meet you at the cemetry gates

Oh, Keats and Yeats are on your side

A dreaded sunny day

So let's go where we're wanted

And I meet you at the cemetry gates

Keats and Yeats are on your side

But you lose 'cause weird lover Wilde is on mine

The Clash London Calling

When they kick at your front door

How you gonna come?

With your hands on your head

Or on the trigger of your gun

Charles Windsor, who's at the door

At such an hour, who's at the door

In the back of an old green Cortina

You're on your way to the guillotine

Here the rabble comes

The kind you hoped were dead

They've come to chop, to chop off your head

Photobucket

Then you came with your breezeblocks

Smashing up my face like a bus-stop

You think you're giving

But you're taking my life away

Photobucket

Won't someone give me more fun?

(and the skin flies all around us)

We kiss in his room to a popular tune

Oh, real drowners

Photobucket

Don't walk away

In silence

See the danger

Always danger

Endless talking

Life rebuilding

Don't walk away

Walk in silence

Don't turn away in silence

Your confusion

My illusion

Worn like a mask of self-hate

Confronts and then dies

Don't walk away

You don't want to hurt me

But see how deep the bullet lies

Unaware I'm tearing you asunder

Oh there is thunder in our hearts

Is there so much hate for the ones we love

Tell me we both matter don't we

Whether to over or under estimate you

You'll never fail like common people

You'll never watch your life slide out of view

All I have is words, words that don't obtain

And I feel I'm a stain on your horizon

So I stay away - it's easier that way

And there won't be no-one I need to rely on

Is it him, is it me

Or is there something only I can see

How did I get here, why do we blow around like straw dogs on the breeze

I'm a special one, what they used to say

But I've to stay on, finish levels-A

You don't need exams when you've read John Gray

The Indelicates American Demo

And nobody ever comes alive

And the journalists clamour round glamour like flies

And boys who should know better grin and get high

And no one does anything to harm the brand

And this gift is an illusion, this isn't hard

Absolutely anyone can play the fucking guitar

And we looked so good

And we lived our lives in black
